Japanese Sugi Cedar Decking in Nampa, Idaho

5/4x6 or 2x6?

5/4x6 (a true 1 in. thick) is the classic deck-board size and works well for decks, paths, raised garden beds, fences and accent walls. 2x6 is thicker and stiffer, for when you want a heavier-feeling board. Check joist spacing for the board you choose; thinner boards usually need closer spacing.

Tips for a long-lasting Sugi deck

• Leave gaps between boards and keep good airflow underneath so the wood dries out.
• Use stainless or coated fasteners to avoid dark stains.
• Apply an exterior finish to keep the color, or let it weather to a natural gray.
• Like any softwood deck, expect some dents and wear in high-traffic spots.
