Why builders choose Sugi for saunas
- Light and soft. Sugi is a lightweight, low-density softwood. Lighter woods generally feel less hot to the touch than dense woods, which is one reason softwoods are the usual choice for sauna interiors.
- Easy to work. It cuts, nails and sands cleanly with ordinary tools.
- Distinctive look. Boards often show cream-colored sapwood next to pinkish to reddish-brown heartwood, so a finished wall has natural striping and warmth. Color varies from board to board.
- Mild, pleasant scent. Sugi has a light wood aroma that many people enjoy.
- Kiln dried, which helps the boards stay stable once installed.
Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) is often called Japanese cedar. Botanically it isn't a true cedar; like western red cedar, it belongs to the cypress family. It has been used in Japanese building for centuries. Curious how it compares? Read our Sugi vs. western red cedar guide.
Using Sugi in a sauna
Walls and ceiling
The 1x6 tongue and groove is the board for the walls and ceiling. Most builders install it over a vapor barrier on the warm side of the insulation, and blind-nail through the tongue so fasteners stay hidden. Not sure how much you need? Use our sauna wood calculator to estimate square feet, linear feet and cost.
Benches
For benches, many builders use thicker boards for the seat slats and frame. Our Sugi 2x4 and 5/4x6 (a true 1 in. thick) are worth a look. Leave small gaps between slats, round over the edges and keep metal fasteners out of the sitting surface so nothing gets hot against your skin.
Finish
Many sauna builders leave interior wood unfinished, or use a product made specifically for sauna interiors. Avoid varnish or other film finishes on benches. Follow the finish maker's directions.
